7 Proven Tips To Craft An Impactful Simple Cover Letter

So you are sold on adding a cover letter to get noticed, right? But now comes even the more challenging part: How to write it? While many opinions exist on writing a simple cover letter, none guarantees the results. So we have come up with 7 proven tips along with a free template to write an effective cover letter that lands you an interview.

1. Follow a professional template format for a simple cover letter

A consistent format will help to structure and organize the simple cover letter effectively. Doing so will also create a better readability experience for the hiring managers. A professional, simple cover letter template format includes both the layout and structure:

  • Layout- Select an easy-to-read font like Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman. In addition, keep the size of the font to 10-12pt. Add 1-1.5-line spacing and double spacing between the paragraphs. Moreover, adjust the margins to 1 inch for each side of the page. Make sure the length of the letter is 250-300 words.
  • Structure- Every cover letter for any job follows a similar structure, i.e. header, salutation, opening introductory lines, body and closing paragraph, and a sign-off. Further, the body section may also include two to three paragraphs, depending on the information needed to add.

2. Create a proper header and personalized greeting

A cover letter begins with a header that includes the recipient’s and applicant’s contact information, making it easy for both parties to reach out to each other. Therefore, adding current and up-to-date information is important to avoid miscommunication.

This part is followed up by some greetings that should directly address the hiring manager. Do not use a traditional style of greeting like ‘To Whom It May Concern.’ Instead, personalize the greeting by including the recruiter’s name, such as ‘Dear Mr./Ms./Mx. Hiring Manager’s Last Name.

  • Add supporting examples- If you mention any achievement or skillset, provide concrete examples backed by numbers to illustrate the impact of your success.

4. Incorporate keywords from the job description

Adding the keywords from the job description strategically in the content can increase the visibility of a simple cover letter. Many companies now use applicant tracking systems to to see how closely they fit the preferred requirements.

So, while writing, highlight the important phrases in the job description. Doing so increases your chance of moving to the next stage in the hiring process.

5. Start the simple cover letter with noteworthy details

The introductory lines should be engaging enough for the reader to stay hooked till the last line. In this part:

  • State the position you are applying for and where you found the job posting.
  • Explain what you can do for them. To do that, research the company’s current state and future plans.
  • Describe how you will fit the plan and help the organization achieve its objectives.
  • Add any notable achievement, skill or years of experience to convey your expertise to the field, making you the best candidate for the job.
  • Lastly, express your passion for joining the advertised position by connecting it with the organizational goals.

6. Explain how you can contribute to the business

In the main body, you will include two to three paragraphs detailing how you will meet the employer’s expectations for the role. Or what value are you bringing to the table? Here’s what you should add in the body part:

  1. Qualifications- Explain how you fulfill the criteria of the qualifications required for the advertised role. Highlight the specific courses, your CGPA and any distinction to demonstrate your in-depth understanding of the field.
  2. Experience- Describe your relevant experience, like the number of years, responsibilities you managed and roles you undertook during the tenure to show your expertise.
  3. Skills- Highlight soft and hard skills to provide a comprehensive overview of how you can contribute to the firm.
  4. Achievements- Mention any accomplishment, like any award you have received or initiative that has shown remarkable results.

7. End the simple cover letter with a brief conclusion

Check the job description to see how you are asked to submit the cover letter. You may need to include it in the body or send it as a separate attachment.
